Decorative matches or a refillable lighter: what comes with each?

Banana in Boots ceramic match holder, with a bold halftone treatment

The fruit in boots isn't just sitting there looking pleased with itself. Howdy's little ceramic match holders have matches inside and a strike pad underneath. It's a pleasingly specific job for a very playful object.

We also carry JOYTOAST's Ripple Lighter Mini, which takes a different approach to lighting a candle. These are adult home accessories. If you're choosing one as a gift, here's what comes with each and what still needs to be supplied.

A small ceramic holder, ready with matches

The Banana in Boots, Orange in Boots and Strawberry match holders are made by a pinch-pot process and hand painted in Austin, Texas. Each has a strike pad on the bottom and comes with matches.

The banana and orange descriptions specify pink matches; the strawberry version describes pink or red. If a particular color matters to the pairing you're making, check that exact option. The fruit forms are different too, so look at the shape you like rather than imagining them all as the same cup with a different picture.

A person who already likes using matches may enjoy having them in something like this. For someone who simply likes the pottery, a Strawberry Trinket Dish gives the illustration another job, holding rings or small belongings.

The Ripple is refillable, and arrives without fuel

The Ripple Lighter Mini is a butane table lighter, approximately 65 by 75 millimeters, with an adjustable flame and a cork base. Its sculpted form is made using a 3D-printing process in Chicago, so small variations in texture and color are part of the making.

It ships without butane. That's a practical detail to know before giving it to someone; fuel isn't included in the box. Use the manufacturer's filling and operating instructions for this model and keep them with the lighter.

Think about the candle alongside it

A Bad Dogs ceramic-cup candle can make a colorful pairing with a match holder. They're separate products, so choose the candle's scent and vessel as carefully as the accessory. Our candle guide compares those details.

For a birthday, the candles themselves raise a different question: which digits, and how much room they need on the cake. That's covered in the number-candle guide. The lighting tool still belongs in an adult's hands and storage space.

Give it a deliberate place

A match holder can look at home with other small ceramics, and a sculpted lighter can look decorative enough to blend into a shelf. They still need to be kept out of children's reach. Follow the maker's storage and use instructions, and decide where the candle supplies will live.

When wrapping a gift, leave the instructions and any packaging that explains its contents with it. A little note can say why you chose the fruit or the color, while the maker's directions handle the practical part. For more home objects, including ones with no flame involved, browse our gift guide.
