Buying handmade jewelry online: metal, length and scale

Beads and pearls on the Novie bracelet, with a bold halftone treatment

The little cowboy hat necklace and the tiny moonstone flowers are very easy to have an opinion about. Jewelry photographs are good at that part. The harder questions are how long the necklace will sit, how big the flowers really are, and what metal is touching your skin.

Gem & Blue makes colorful beaded pieces, freshwater pearls, small botanical shapes and larger sculptural ones. Here's how we'd move from liking a picture to choosing a piece you can picture wearing.

Start with something you already wear

If you have a necklace that sits where you like, measure it. Otherwise, use a length of string to try the position against a neckline you often wear. The measurement gives you a better comparison than a close-up on a screen, where a short necklace can fill just as much space as a long one.

The Gemma Pearl Necklace is 14 inches with a 2-inch extension, with Czech beads and a baroque pearl at its center. The Novie Bead Necklace and Cleo Necklace are 14.5 inches with a 2-inch extension. That extension gives you a range to try; where it falls still depends on the wearer.

The Blue Poppy Bead Necklace is 14 inches plus a 2-inch extension, combining ceramic, wood and glass beads with freshwater pearls. The Montero Necklace takes a longer route: an 18-inch chain with a little cowboy-hat pendant. The hat is approximately 20 by 15 millimeters, a useful detail when you're imagining its scale.

Small flowers, tiny mushrooms, much larger hoops

The Moonflower Studs are about 7 millimeters across, with a 3 millimeter natural rainbow moonstone in the center. Mini Mush Studs are approximately 7 by 5 millimeters. Drawing those dimensions on paper helps you see just how small these pieces are.

Mini Pearl Earrings use 3 millimeter freshwater pearls. At the other end of this comparison, the wavy, J-shaped Freya Hoops are about 2¼ inches long and 1½ inches wide. You might enjoy both, but they give a very different amount of shape around your face.

Bow Earrings sit between those scales at roughly 1⅜ inches long by 1 inch wide. The Gumball Pearl Hoops are about ⅞ inch long, and Moonstone Pearl Drop Earrings extend to about 1¼ inches. Compare width as well as length: a slim drop and a broad hoop can feel quite different at a similar height.

The metal can change from one component to another

The Pearl Moon Ring has a carved mother-of-pearl moon in a gold-filled setting on a sterling silver band. Those are three distinct parts of the object, so calling the whole thing gold would miss something useful.

Moonflower Studs use 14k gold-filled components, as do the approximately 14 millimeter Gold Heli Hoops. Other pieces offer different metal options. Read the specific construction, particularly if a metal matters to your own requirements; gold-filled, gold-plated and solid gold aren't interchangeable descriptions. Color alone also doesn't establish that a piece will suit sensitive skin.

Wrists and fingers need their own measurements

The Novie and Fia Bead Bracelets are 6.5 inches with a 2-inch extension. Compare that with a bracelet you find comfortable, including how loosely you like it to sit. The Paperclip Pearl Bracelet is approximately 7 inches, with half textured chain and half freshwater pearls.

For the Balanced Opal Ring, look at the actual ring-size and stone options. If you're buying a gift and don't know the person's size, ask or choose something less dependent on fit. Don't plan around resizing or exchanging a ring until you've confirmed those details.

After you've chosen

Use the maker's care directions for the whole piece, including pearls, beads and stones. A cleaning method for metal alone may not suit everything attached to it. A small dish can give jewelry a place to rest when it's off.

For a gift, knowing whether the recipient wears pierced-ear jewelry matters before choosing earrings. If another accessory fits their style better, see our hair-clip and shoe-charm guide or the broader gift guide. A few measurements let the design be the part you can enjoy choosing.
