The mesh backpack puts a taller load on your back. The fanny pack holds a smaller group of things close to your waist or across your body. You can see why the same things might pack quite differently into the two, even before looking at their capacity.
That carrying shape is where we'd start with these Mokuyobi bags. Do you want a bag on your back, or a smaller load in front of you? Then set out the bottle, folded layer and other things you actually carry, so you can compare more than a number of liters.
Tall bag or long compartment?
The Mesh Mini Backpack has a 5.5-liter main compartment and 6 liters including the pockets. It is 13 inches high and 10 inches wide, with a main-pocket depth of 4.5 inches, or 6 inches including the front pocket. Empty, it weighs about a pound.
The Fanny Pack has a 3.5-liter main compartment and measures 12.5 inches wide, 5.5 inches high and 6 inches deep. Its long, low shape asks for a different arrangement from the backpack.
Measure your bulkiest object first. A bag can have enough overall volume and still be the wrong shape for a rigid lunchbox or tall container. Leave room for the opening and the other things, rather than treating the listed dimensions as a promise that every inch can be filled.
What needs to come out often?
Try a packing arrangement at home. The backpack may be the place for a layer and larger day-out items. The fanny pack may make more sense for the smaller things you want close by, with the rest carried elsewhere.
Give little objects a pocket or pouch you can find again. If you need to empty the bag to get to the thing you use at every stop, the arrangement probably needs another try. The front pocket and main compartment on the backpack let you separate the load, while the fanny pack has a lining pocket inside its zippered main compartment.
Check the carrying fit
The fanny pack's total bag-and-strap circumference adjusts from 35 to 51 inches. Measure the route where you want to wear it, over the clothes you expect underneath. It isn't a toddler fit simply because the bag looks small.
The mesh backpack has adjustable webbing straps. Try it loaded when you can, and see how it sits on the wearer. “Mini” describes the bag; the strap fit and proportions still need their own look.
Keep food and overnight extras in mind
The backpack uses vinyl-coated mesh, while the fanny pack uses water-resistant nylon pack cloth. For food carried separately, the Mokuyobi Cooler Bag has insulation and a different pocket layout. Our small cooler packing guide goes through that setup.
For an overnight visit, add indoor footwear only if you'll use it. Our Mokuyobi slipper guide covers the adult Grid pair. When you get home, empty the pockets and clear out the crumbs before putting the bags away. It's a modest favor to the next outing.
