Before buying someone a bath soak, it helps to know whether they have a bath. It's a small detail, but it changes the gift completely. The same is true of an oil, a rich body butter or something that releases scent in the shower: they might sit together on a shelf, but they ask quite different things of the person taking them home.
There are a few rosemary products in this part of the shop, along with lavender shower steamers. If you know someone likes those scents, here's how we'd narrow down the choice.
For someone who likes an oil
Ojai Rosemary Body Oil combines jojoba oil with rosemary essential oil in a 4 ounce glass dropper bottle. It's an herbal-scented body oil, and the dropper is part of the appeal for someone who prefers dispensing a little oil to dipping into a cream.
There's also a Rosemary Beard Oil, in a 2 ounce dropper bottle, with coconut oil, rosemary oil and a touch of palo santo. We'd choose that for a beard-care routine specifically. The shared rosemary scent doesn't make the two formulas interchangeable.
Or a jar of body butter
Rosemary Whipped Body Butter has shea butter, cocoa butter and rosemary essential oil in an 8 ounce jar. This is the richer, scoop-from-a-jar direction. If the person already likes that kind of texture, there's no need to talk yourself into an oil just because the bottle looks nice.
Ounces don't settle this comparison. Four ounces of something they'll enjoy using is a more thoughtful choice than eight ounces of a texture they don't like. For a gift, a little knowledge of their preferences does more work than a bigger package.
Something for the bath—or for the shower
Rosemary Bath Soak contains sea salt and rosemary essential oil. This is the one for a person who has a tub and likes spending time in it. Choose from the offered size and keep the package instructions with the gift so they have the amount and method of use.
The Lavender Shower Steamers come as five rounds in a glass jar. Following the product directions, place one on the shower floor away from the heavy stream of water. As it gets wet and dissolves, it releases lavender scent. A steamer belongs in that shower setting; it isn't a body oil or a substitute for a bath soak.
If you're choosing for a shared bathroom, our family bath-product guide looks separately at wash, lotion and bath formats. And if a bath or shower gift feels too particular, hand cream or soap might be easier to match.
What about the rosemary spray?
Ojai Rosemary Aromatherapy Spray combines rosemary and lavender essential oils with distilled water in a 4 ounce glass bottle. With a spray, the application directions matter as much as the scent. Follow the bottle's directions for where to use it; the name doesn't tell you whether it's meant for skin, clothing or a particular surface.
That also goes for ingredient preferences. Knowing someone enjoys lavender doesn't tell you everything they need from a formula. If they have particular requirements, use the full label or choose the exact item they've asked for.
Wrapping jars and bottles
For glass jars and bottles, a box with protection around the container makes wrapping easier; our wrapping-paper guide takes it from there. Keep the labels readable and the directions attached. There are plenty of other ideas in the gift guide if you decide the person would rather have something for their kitchen than their bathroom.
