A closer look at Buoy: bottle size, opening design and carrying fit

Buoy bottles arranged on an outdoor wooden table, with a bold halftone treatment

The interesting thing about the Buoy Bottle is where it opens. Along with the top, there's an opening through the middle, so you can get to the interior for cleaning. If you've ever looked at a narrow bottle opening and wondered how to reach the bottom, you'll understand why that detail is worth noticing.

It also has a rounded shape, a thumb loop and a 30 ounce capacity. Those features work together as an object you'll carry around, so we'd think about more than the color when choosing it.

Thirty ounces of water, seven ounces empty

Buoy holds 30 ounces, approximately 0.9 liters, and weighs 7 ounces empty. Think about the amount of water you want to carry on the trip you have in mind, as well as the bottle itself.

Capacity doesn't tell you whether it fits a car cup holder or the side pocket of a bag. For a pocket you particularly want to use, measure the opening and depth, then compare them with the bottle's physical dimensions. Its rounded silhouette asks for a different sort of space from a narrow cylinder.

If you plan to carry it by hand, the thumb loop gives you another place to hold it. If it'll go in a tote, lay out the other things coming along. Our tote and clutch guide uses that same practical starting point.

The opening through the center

Buoy's three-part design has a top, middle and bottom. Opening it at the center gives access to the inside rather than asking you to do all the cleaning through the mouth. The bottle is dishwasher safe.

Follow the supplied instructions for taking it apart, cleaning and putting it back together. With several pieces, reassembly is part of the routine too: take a moment to check that the components are seated and closed as directed before putting the bottle among your other belongings.

Buoy's own bottle information explains the construction and care. The maker's page may show a color combination different from the ones in our shop, so use our product options when deciding which version to order.

The material behind the shape

The bottle is made in the USA from recycled ocean-bound HDPE plastic. That gives you the material and origin story of this particular object. For everyday use, it's also worth asking whether you like the shape, have room to carry it, and are happy with the way it comes apart for cleaning.

For uses beyond ordinary drinking-water storage, follow Buoy's guidance on drink temperatures and handling.

Then choose the color

Color can be useful as well as enjoyable if several bottles share a room. Choose one you can recognize from the shop's options. If you're hoping to attach the loop to another accessory, check that connection rather than assuming the two are made to work together.

For a day out, our Sonrei Kids Zinq guide explains the stocked sunscreen and its label. For toiletries you're packing, the Davids comparison keeps those formula names straight. Buoy's question is a more physical one: how much water, where the bottle will sit, and whether that middle opening is the cleaning arrangement you'd like.
