A little bit of matching can be really sweet. A strawberry on an adult pullover and a much bigger strawberry on a child's tee, say, or the same blue turning up in two otherwise different outfits. We like that there can be a connection without having to persuade everyone to wear exactly the same thing.
Our adult clothes are part of the shop for a reason. The cotton, colors and small fruit details carry across pieces for different ages, so you can put something together as a family and still choose the shape each person actually wants to wear. Start there. The clothes you already feel good in give you a much better starting point than a picture of a perfectly matched group.
One shared detail is plenty
If you want to begin with a motif, fruit is an easy place to look. A baby could wear a fruit design in the Washed Black Short-Sleeve Bodysuit, while an older child wears the Strawberry Tee. The drawings don't need to be the same size, and the garments are doing different jobs. That's part of what makes the pairing feel relaxed.
Choose the useful shape and size for each person, then look at the designs available in that combination. If the exact fruit doesn't line up, you can follow a color instead.
The grown-up pullover should feel like your own clothes
The Natural White Adult Pullover is a unisex crewneck with a slightly oversized fit. Natural is undyed, and it has that warm cotton color that sits easily next to brighter pieces. The Washed Black Adult Pullover gives you a darker starting point, with the small motif carrying the connection.
We designed the adult pullover to be waist-length, with room to size up for more width without adding a great deal of length. It's worth comparing it with a sweatshirt you already wear: chest width, where the hem lands, and what you like to put underneath. Our unisex pullover sizing guide goes into that fit a little more.
You should be able to reach for it on an ordinary morning, even when everyone else in the family has gone in a completely different color direction.
Or let a hat do the matching
The Pato Five-Panel Hat comes in Big Kid and Adult options, so a shared print can sit above whichever clothes each person chooses. That can be a nice way to include someone who wants to take part but has a very clear opinion about their shirt.
The two size names still need individual measurements. We've put the measuring steps in our five-panel hat guide, so you can choose the fit before getting attached to a particular print.
If you're coordinating for a photo or a birthday, lay the outfits together and see what catches your eye. You might find you've already repeated a red, a blue, or the dark ground of a print. Our color-combination guide has more ways to build around those small connections.
Leave some room for a child's choice, too. Two shirts that both work with the same pants is a manageable decision to offer. An older sibling might want a tiny connection; another child might be delighted by strawberries on everyone. You can meet somewhere in the middle.
Before adding anything to the cart, think of one other outfit you'd wear it with. If that comes easily, you've probably found a piece with somewhere to go after the occasion. And if you're nearby, come try the adult pullover at our shop at 700 Lombard in North Beach. We'd be happy for the matching idea to start with something you want to wear yourself.
