How to measure for a big-kid or adult five-panel hat

5-panel hat detail with a bold duotone Paper halftone treatment

A hat can be a small place to put a print you really like. You don't have to build a whole outfit around it. But first it has to sit comfortably on the head, which is why we'd spend a minute on the size before choosing between the florals, checks and stripes.

The Pato Five-Panel Hat was designed, cut and sewn in San Francisco with exclusive prints for Colorful Bunch. It comes in Big Kid and Adult options. Those labels give you a starting point; a measurement gives you something more useful if you're unsure between them.

Measure where the cap will sit

Take a flexible tape around the head along the line where the hat normally rests. Keep it level and comfortably close, without pulling it tight. Measure once more to check yourself, then write down the number and the unit.

If you don't have a flexible tape, use a length of string and lay it against a ruler afterward. Compare with the size guidance for this cap, or ask us to check the fit question. A head measurement is more helpful than guessing an age range from “Big Kid.”

Your favorite cap is a useful reference

Circumference isn't the whole shape. A crown can be deeper or shallower, and the brim changes how the hat looks and feels when worn. If there's already a cap the wearer likes, notice where it sits and what they like about it.

When trying a new one, let it sit in its normal position. If you're continually pushing it into a particular shape, that tells you something too. For a gift, asking about a favorite cap or getting a head measurement is a small bit of preparation that can make the choice easier.

What the five panels do

The panels are the fabric pieces joined to make the crown. Their seams help form its shape, and a printed fabric shows different parts of its pattern across those pieces. Look at the whole hat in the photographs, rather than choosing it for one tiny isolated bit of the print.

Once the size is settled, see which of Pato's floral, checked or striped options you want to wear. The local making is part of the appeal for us: the design, cutting and sewing all happened here in San Francisco.

Wear it with what you have

The San Francisco Tee brings a lineup of landmarks to the local theme. The Heart Tee has a simpler motif. Either can leave room for a patterned cap without turning the whole outfit into matching pieces.

Adults and children can share an accessory idea while wearing very different clothes. There are more examples in our family outfit guide, and our color-combination guide starts with repeating one color from a print.

Keep the care information for the actual hat with it. Then choose the pattern you want to see on the way out the door; it can be a small addition to an otherwise familiar outfit.
