Sometimes the whole costume is what you want: dragon wings, tail, hat and outfit all belonging together. Sometimes a mushroom hat over clothes already in the wardrobe is the better idea. Both can make a character. Before choosing, we'd separate the look in the photograph from the pieces that will actually arrive.
Full outfits and single accessories do different jobs
The red-and-gold dragon is a 95% cotton, 5% spandex design whose listed full sets include a hat, tail, wings and garment. The rainbow lion uses the same stated fiber blend, with a hat, tail and garment in its listed set.
For the circus lion, check the selected garment size and component list. The circus bunny is offered in infant garment sizes in a 95% cotton, 5% spandex blend; the selected size still needs its own fit and use check.
The mushroom listing is a particularly good reason to read the option carefully: its variant format is a hat. A title or styled photo can suggest a larger outfit than the option contains. Band of the Wild's unicorn offering is also a hat, rather than a full costume.
A cape or wings can work with what's already there
Lovelane's green cape-and-hat set and pink set are cotton canvas and recommended for ages three and up. Each cape is listed as 19 inches long at the back and 33 inches at its widest point. Think about that shape over the clothes the wearer will use.
With hats, start from head circumference. Lovelane's lava dragon hat, for example, is listed to fit up to 21 inches. A cape length and a hat circumference answer different fit questions, and neither replaces the product's age guidance.
Look at how the wings are made
Jack Be Nimble's blue butterfly wings are hand-printed canvas with wide straps and elastic wristbands. The Monarch wings bring an orange cotton design and wide straps. The creature and color might make the first impression, but the way the piece is worn matters too.
Ladybug wings have cotton outer fabric, polyester fill and tulle under-wings. Their listed fit is for most children ages two and up, with spot treatment and flat drying specified for care. Use those directions for that item; another pair of wings may need different handling.
Choose for the wearing, then keep the pieces together
Check the exact variant's measurements, contents and use directions before comparing prices. A hat and a complete outfit aren't the same purchase, even if both make the character you had in mind.
Keep accessories for dress-up as directed. “Pajama” in a product name doesn't establish that hats, tails or wings should be worn for sleep. Afterward, put the components away together and follow the care instructions for each piece.
Our year-round dress-up guide considers how an outfit can keep being used. If making the accessory is part of the fun, compare paint-your-own tiaras and cuffs. And for a story before the outing, there are Halloween books about a curious cow and some surprised chickens.
