Packing a family picnic with a small cooler bag

Cooler Bag detail with a bold duotone Paper halftone treatment

The picnic bag is easier to pack once you know which container holds lunch. That sounds almost too small a place to start, but a tall bottle and a wide, rigid box ask very different things of a bag. Lay them out before adding the napkins and the things that always end up tucked in at the last minute.

The Mokuyobi Cooler Bag gives you a main compartment, four interior side pockets and a separate bottom zipper pocket for an ice pack. We like that you can decide where those little things belong before you're looking for them at the picnic.

Pay attention to the bottom width

The bag measures 16 inches across the top, 10 inches across the bottom, 9 inches high and 8 inches deep. So it isn't a straight-sided box. Compare a rigid container with the narrower base as well as the wider opening.

Set the heavier things low, work out which containers need to stay upright, and check that the bag closes with the intended load. Keep lids accessible. A packing arrangement that looks tidy with everything open can be much less convenient when you want only one item.

Give the pockets a purpose

The bottom compartment is designed for an ice pack. The side pockets can hold appropriately sized cooling supplies or smaller items such as utensils. Try keeping napkins and a cleanup bag somewhere you can reach without lifting out all the food.

Pack anything that needs a seal in its own suitable container. The cooler has a nylon outer and lining and double-insulation construction, but those features don't replace the storage requirements of the food itself. For perishables, plan appropriate cooling and follow current food-safety guidance for the meal and outing.

Leave room for the cooling supplies you need, instead of filling every available space with food. That may mean choosing a smaller container or carrying one item separately.

Keep the spare clothes elsewhere

A Mesh Mini Backpack can carry a spare top, a book or other things that aren't part of lunch. Keeping them separate also means a spill in the food bag doesn't reach the backup outfit.

The Mokuyobi Fanny Pack is another option for an adult's smaller, frequently used essentials. Our backpack and crossbody comparison looks at its shape and strap range alongside the backpack.

Try carrying it before you leave

The cooler strap adjusts from 26 to 46 inches. Adjust it on the intended wearer with the bag loaded, and think about the walk or transit trip ahead. Something that sits nicely on a table can pull differently once it's over a shoulder.

When you get home, empty all the compartments, including the bottom pocket. The bag is machine washable; use the supplied care instructions for the wash and drying settings, and let every pocket dry before storing it.

A short list kept with the bag can help next time: the containers, cooling supplies, utensils, napkins and something for cleanup. Change the meal, keep the useful arrangement.
