Choosing birthday number candles: digits, size and a personal card

Confetti number candles in different numerals, with a bold halftone treatment

Eleven needs two ones. Twenty-two needs two twos. It sounds obvious until you're choosing a number candle online and have to remember that selecting the digit and selecting the quantity are two different steps.

Our Confetti Number Candles are sold by individual numeral. Here's a little help with that order, the space on the cake, and the card that goes alongside it.

Write the number before you order

Make a note of the exact digits you want, then check them against the options in the product menu. For a repeated digit, adjust the quantity too. It's a small bit of preparation that is easier to do now than while you're getting the cake ready.

The available numerals may change. If the combination you need isn't there, you can choose another way to mark the number—a handwritten card, for example—without rebuilding the whole celebration around it. If you're buying for someone else's party, ask whether they've already chosen candles.

Leave room for the number

A cupcake and a full-size cake offer very different amounts of space. Look at the candle measurements and the surface you have available, especially with two digits. A close-up photo can make the candle seem larger than it is.

If you need a precise measurement that isn't shown, ask us before deciding on the arrangement. Think about other decorations too, and follow the candle's use guidance for spacing and placement. It helps to plan the whole top of the cake before the last few minutes.

The beeswax and the confetti

These are handmade beeswax number candles with cotton wicks and decorative glitter. The maker describes the glitter as made from eucalyptus leaves.

Keep any supplied instructions with the candle, and have an adult manage it and the flame. Store the chosen digits with the other party things so they don't get separated in the meantime. Follow the product guidance around decorations when it's time to light them.

What to write in the card

The number tells you the age; the note can say something about the person. Our Happy Birthday Card comes with a lilac envelope. Birthday Ice Cream and Birthday Ribbons offer other illustrated fronts.

Write about something you enjoyed together, or an interest you like hearing them talk about. You don't have to turn the birthday into a speech about growing up. Our card-message guide has more ways to begin when you're staring at the blank inside.

If there's a present to wrap, the wrapping-paper guide helps you fit the sheet around it. If you're still choosing the present, browse the gift guide. Then check your number once more, put the digits together, and keep them where you'll find them when the cake comes out.
