Dinosaur gifts: compare a book, a rolling toy and a buildable creature

Baldwin wooden rolling dinosaurs grouped together, cropped with a bold forest-and-peach Paper halftone treatment.

“They love dinosaurs” is a helpful start for a present, but it leaves quite a lot of room. Do they want a dinosaur to roll across the floor, take apart, decorate, or hear a story about? We have versions of each in the shop. Choosing the activity first makes the favorite creature a more useful clue.

A dinosaur story to share

Dinosaur Dance! gives the dinosaurs a read-aloud rather than a display shelf. Sandra Boynton's characters are dancing, which offers an adult a playful story to share with someone who likes the theme.

The 16-page English board-book edition is a small, specific gift to choose by language and physical format. For ideas around the reading itself, see our movement-story guide.

A rolling dinosaur or one with removable parts

Baldwin Toy Co.'s hardwood dinosaur has wheels and measures about 6 inches long, 5 inches high and 2 inches wide. The creature's shape is the theme; rolling is the action. We'd keep that distinction in mind for someone who enjoys moving an object from one place to another.

The Serious Toy Company's red-oak Velociraptor has a removable head and legs joined by magnets. Arranging the animal is part of the attraction, and the detachable pieces make it a different choice from a wheeled figure.

Check the exact age label and warnings before choosing either toy for a child. In particular, a wooden magnetic model isn't an infant toy just because its material looks simple. Our magnetic dinosaur comparison looks at the different species and construction; our wooden-vehicle guide offers more rolling formats.

A dinosaur to decorate

OMY Air Toy Dinos takes the theme to the art table. It's an inflatable dinosaur designed for coloring and as a decorative object, so the gift includes a project to do before there is an object to display.

Check the package for included supplies, permitted coloring materials and inflation instructions. If the recipient already has markers, find out whether those work with the kit's surface before adding more. A clear work area where the object can lie comfortably will be more useful than a pile of unrelated craft extras.

We'd describe the present by that experience when giving it: a dinosaur story, a creature to arrange, or something to make. If you're adding a second item, give it a different role. The wider Colorful Bunch gift guide has other directions if the recipient's interests take you beyond dinosaurs.
